Melbourne Solves Tourism Puzzle

THE latest stage of Tourism Victoria's long-running jigsaw ad campaign will focus on lesser-known destinations in and around Melbourne, using social media to encourage travellers to share their favourite holiday spots.

The 10th phase of the campaign, first launched in 1993, will be unveiled this weekend and will target Australian travellers, especially those in Sydney.

Tourism Victoria director of marketing Don Richter said the new phase of the campaign would be fully integrated, making the most use of digital media.

Mr Richter said tourism and travel was ideally suited to the Web 2.0 age, with people increasingly using social media to write about travel destinations and research holidays.

He said the newest phase of the campaign would also ''be dialling up the slightly more energetic and youthful component of the market''.

The long-running campaign had been highly successful, with Tourism Victoria using research to continually evolve the campaign's focus, emphasising aspects of Victoria people enjoyed, or meeting a gap in the market.

''We've got to a situation where Melbourne is the most-loved destination in Australia; people get that Melbourne is a sophisticated, cultural place.

''The next stage is to activate that love of Melbourne by giving them new excuses to come here. One of our challenges is that people think they know Melbourne - but in fact there is a lot more to discover.''

Mr Richter said there was never any possibility of not continuing to use the 17-year-old jigsaw campaign, with research demonstrating its success. He said it was a credit to successive state governments that they had stuck with the campaign, as a common problem with destination marketing was that new governments often demanded a new marketing campaign.

Surveys by Roy Morgan Research have found that Melbourne holds the lead as the destination most preferred by Australians for a domestic holiday in the next two years. The most recent (2010) survey found Melbourne beat the other states and territories for both interstate overnight visitor numbers (4 million) and total domestic overnight spending ($4.7 billion).

Roy Morgan's brand-health survey found that Melbourne was the Australian city perceived by most Australians to be associated with sporting and cultural events. Melbourne led this ranking in 2005 and has held the top spot since then.

According to the survey, Melbourne also continues to increase its lead over all other Australian cities as the destination most associated with great shopping.

Largest Cruise Ship, the Azura to Visit Australia in 2013

Australia will welcome the largest P&O Cruises World Cruising ship to visit its shores in 2013, when the 3100-passenger Azura sails Down Under as part of the biggest world cruise program ever launched.

At 115,000-tonnes, the 290-metre long Azura will be one of the largest ships ever to visit Australia and is too tall to fit under the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Launched in the UK last year by the Australian-based prima ballerina Darcey Bussell, Azura is the headline act in the 2013 program which also features epic cruises onboard Arcadia, Aurora and Adonia. Azura will be the youngest member of P&O Cruises’ seven-ship fleet to visit Australia.

Announcing details of the 2013 world program today, P&O Cruises Managing Director Carol Marlow said the cruise line would enjoy a ‘triple A’ summer in Australia with three of the four world cruise ships - Azura, Aurora and Arcadia – collectively making 11 calls to Australian ports during February and March 2013.

Ms Marlow said the 2013 program would be the largest yet for any cruise line, with the four ships visiting 94 destinations in 52 different countries and covering more than 130,000 nautical miles. The program represents a 23 per cent increase in world cruise capacity compared to 2012 and comes as the cruise line celebrates 175 years’ heritage of cruising.

In addition to the four full world cruises, 18 line voyages between the UK and Australia or New Zealand are also available on Aurora, Arcadia and Azura.

The Azura has the following two cruises departing Australia:

13 nights cruising on Azura from Singapore to Melbourne, departing February 10, 2013. The sector is part of Azura’s 110-night Grand Odyssey which sails from Southampton on January 7, 2013 and visits the Middle East, India, Australia and South Africa
22 nights cruising on Aurora from San Francisco to Sydney, departing January 30, 2013. The cruise comes during Aurora’s 106-night World Circumnavigation departing the UK on January 7, 2013 and visiting the US, Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, Egypt and India
Ms Marlow said the 2013 program offered great value with early booking discounts of 10 per cent and onboard spending money of up to £2200 per couple available for those who book by December 31, 2011.

Full world voyages and line voyages will go on sale on at 5pm on Thursday July 14 while sector voyages will go on sale from 5pm on Friday July 15.

Ms Marlow said Azura would call at Fremantle (February 17, 2013), Adelaide (February 21) and Melbourne (February 23) on her maiden world voyage with an overnight stay in Sydney (February 25-26) before sailing to Brisbane (February 28) and Cairns (March 3).

“Azura’s maiden world cruise visits many ports of call for the first time – including those in Australia – the home of her Godmother Darcey Bussell,” Ms Marlow said.

“Her maiden call into Sydney will be celebrated in true P&O Cruises’ style when we hope to reunite Darcey with her ship for the first time since performing her Godmother duties in April 2010.”

Ms Marlow said Azura’s maiden world voyage was a classic itinerary featuring some of the most exciting and cultural destinations around the world.

“The ship itself takes inspiration from around the globe, with an Indian fine dining restaurant, Sindhu, Italian inspired casual restaurants Verona and Venezia, and wines from all over the world selected and served by the glass in The Glass House wine bar.

“These features combined with her variety of bars, restaurants, dance floors, spa, gym, shops, theatre and library make Azura the perfect ship for travelling the world and many of our passengers will be excited to hear that she will be offering her maiden world cruise so soon after entering service.”

Tourism Victoria launches $14m ‘Play Melbourne’ campaign to lure younger visitors

"Play Melbourne" The campaign positions Melbourne as a “vibrant, creative and edgy city of experiences”, the Victorian minister for tourism and major events Louise Asher said at the launch event in Sydney this morning.

New South Wales is Victoria’s biggest tourism market – 1.1m Sydneysiders visit Melbourne annually, spending $4.7bn.

“Every tourism product needs to be refreshed,” said Asher. “Melbourne has done well to attract older visitors, now we’re marketing to the younger generation. The ad is about spontaneity. If you roll the dice, wherever you go there’ll be something fabulous to experience in Melbourne.”

The campaign includes a year-long competition where the winners will get a trip to Melbourne for two via the website playmelbourne.com.au.

The ads cost $1.5m to produce; initial media spend is $3.9m. The campaign, which will run nationwide and in New Zealand from next year, is budgeted to cost $14m over 2-3 years, according to Asher.

Tourism Victoria’s advertising business is currently under review, with the department looking for a lead agency for major campaigns and a boutique agency for fast turn-around work.

You just have to be curious enough to venture off the beaten path. The more curious you are, the more enjoyment you will find. The possibilities are endless...

Big Spending China Tourists Splash Out

Tourists from China are the biggest spenders in Australia and they're likely to splash out more in future.

China is Australia's fastest growing inbound tourism market, currently fourth behind New Zealand, the UK and the US, Tourism Research Australia (TRA) says.

But they outspent the other four in 2010 to the tune of $3.1 billion, after Chinese visits rose to 454,000.

Most of them went to the gateway cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth but seven per cent spent nights in regional Australia.

Tropical north Queensland, the NSW south coast and Hunter region and outback NSW were the most popular regional destinations.

"Chinese visitors accounted for 13 per cent of all international nights spent in outback NSW," TRA says.

The Tourism Research forecasting committee says it expects visitor arrivals from China to rise 26 per cent to 571,000.

In the longer term to 2020, average growth in arrivals of 7.2 per cent is forecast with China to become the most valuable inbound market and the second largest after NZ.
