Mulan Acrobatic Show - Melbourne Events

The internationally acclaimed Mulan Acrobatic Show is coming to Australia in 2011. Following a six-month tour of the US, the dazzling show for families will return to Sydney by popular demand in time to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Mulan Acrobatic show is a swift and entertaining two-hour fusion of the famous myths, music, movement, costume, fantasy, danger and playfulness all wrapped up in one. Audiences in the US raved, “to properly describe the act in words is not possible, it has to be seen, but imagine bouncing juggling pins off the floor to each while swiftly passing others through the air at the same time; even juggling pins that are stationary on the feet”.

The visually spectacular show and ideal for families, Mulan features thirty five performers, with the youngest being twelve years old and has made an outstanding breakthrough in acrobatic techniques, with incredible displays of Shadow Puppet Play, Silk Trapeze, Meteriors and Hoop Diving. A team of professional martial arts performers has been incorporated into the show to bring about a unique, high adventure and breathtaking visual experience. Mulan pushes the impossible to the extreme as acrobats dive and throw themselves like human arrows through multiple golden hoops. Performers elegantly and gracefully form their bodies into living sculptures - a challenge of strength and flexibility.

Let your imagination run wild as you immerse in the spectacular legend and relax to sounds of acorns falling to the ground. Don’t miss the unique and refreshing experience this summer. Book Now!

Australia Picked as top Destination - Melbourne Tourism News

Over 1000 people were polled in a survey conducted by Britain’s top cheap flights comparison site Skyscanner, that examined various components of a holiday including the quality of accommodation, food, length of flight, weather, duration, motivation for the trip, travelling companions as well as details of planning and paying.

Further and longer = happier!

Skyscanner's study showed that people are happiest when they go abroad and the further away the better, with six of the top ten happiest holiday destinations being long haul. The survey also revealed that those who were most happy had been away for the longest period.

The countries ranked in order of happiness were:

1) Australia
2) Canada
3) South Africa
4) India
5) France
6) Thailand
7) USA
8) Italy
9) Portugal
10) Greece
11) Spain
12) Turkey
13) Germany
14) UK

Psychologist Cliff Arnall, speaking on behalf of Skyscanner, explained the reasons behind the findings: "As great as holidaying in the UK can be, most people enjoy experiencing somewhere different with a better climate. Short haul trips to Europe can offer this but they are also now relatively common. Long haul holidays tend to be for longer periods of time and have greater impact because they are seen as more special than staying in the UK or catching flights to Spain, for example."

Overall, 69% of those surveyed were ‘ecstatic' or ‘very happy' about their last holiday. This is due to the fact that people enjoy the relaxation achieved by a holiday says Mr Arnall: "Two thirds of working people dislike their jobs and many resent the routine associated with the predictable, mundane nature of things at home. Being on holiday is an ideal escape from this and is both stimulating and relaxing."

The study also revealed that, contrary to popular belief, money can in fact buy happiness; those who had spent more than £3000 per person on their holiday were the most happy. This ties in with the longer haul destinations, and may also in part be due to the type of trip; for example a honeymoon or a ‘once in a lifetime' voyage has extra special meaning and is likely to cost more.

A sense of sharing was also important, with the happiest people making a joint contribution in planning and paying for the trip. "Holiday planning, especially when done jointly, is a very satisfying activity. As long as all concerned feel they are making a contribution and having their views taken into account then planning is both enjoyable and makes people feel emotionally closer to each other." says Mr Arnall.

The survey showed that it takes more than just money to make a happy holiday; the choice of travel companion and socialising once there is also significant. Those who had holidayed with friends and also made new friends whilst away, were happiest. How visitors are treated by their local hosts also affected happiness; the more welcoming and friendly they are, the better the experience.

Good weather was also important to achieve maximum satisfaction while on holiday. This is especially relevant for those living in the UK where the climate is unpredictable and a common cause of complaint. Therefore the guarantee of sun (or snow) is a vital factor in holiday happiness.

Expectations and the planning of a trip also affected satisfaction. Rather than having heightened expectations that were then dashed, the survey found that those who had planned a long time in advance were happiest.

Mr Arnall explains: "Booking ahead provides two very important positives; something to look forward to and something to tell other people about. People who have booked ahead well in advance have the satisfaction (and some might say smugness!) of knowing exactly where they are going and when.

Telling other people about nice things you are going to do is a crucial part of boosting self-esteem and achieving social status."

Titanic - The Exhibition (Melbourne Tourism Events)

On April 15, 1912, Titanic, the world’s largest ship, sank after colliding with an iceberg, claiming more than 1,500 lives and shaking the world’s confidence in the infallibility of modern technology. Almost 100 years later, Melbourne Museum will pay tribute to the tragedy in Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition, which showcases more than 280 artefacts retrieved from Titanic’s debris field, offering visitors a poignant look at this legendary Ship and its passengers and crew.

The Exhibition has been created with a focus on Titanic’s compelling human stories, told through authentic artefacts and exacting re-creations of the Ship’s interior. Delicate bottles of perfume, china bearing the logo of the elite White Star Line, even a piece of the hull of Titanic - these and many other objects collected from the wreck site offer poignant connections to lives abruptly ended or forever changed by one of the world’s greatest maritime disasters.

Victoria makes bid for more Chinese tourists

The Victorian Government is launching an $8 million campaign to market Melbourne and regional Victoria to China.

Tourism Victoria will lead the scheme, in a bid to make China the state's largest international visitor market by 2014.

The Tourism Forecasting Committee predicts more tourists will come from China in four years time than from the traditional markets of New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

The campaign will begin next year and promote Victoria's sights, wildlife and history.

Appeal for big Vic tourism investment (Tourism Victoria)

Business chiefs have called for a big state government investment in tourism along the Victorian coast, saying it would lure more visitors to the state, encourage them to stay longer and boost regional economies.

Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Wayne Kayler-Thomson urged the government to make tourism infrastructure a priority in its regional blueprint, to be released next month.

VECCI is calling for maritime projects, including a car ferry service from Phillip Island to Stony Point, on the Mornington Peninsula. Mr Kayler-Thomson said the service had been identified as a top-priority tourism project in Victoria, and would complete a coastal link for tourists driving from Sydney to as far as South Australia.

Soccer: History suggests All Whites are in with a shout

MELBOURNE - Soccer's world ratings and bookmakers confirm New Zealand's status as rank outsiders for tonight's pre-World Cup friendly against Australia at the MCG - but a virtual cricket score is no formality for the Socceroos.

Australia do not expect the All Whites to spoil their send off for South Africa but history suggests New Zealand - ranked a lowly 78 and $11 outsiders - are prone to embarrassing their better-credentialed neighbours at the most opportune moments.

New Zealand has twice prevented Australia - currently ranked 20th by FIFA - qualifying for the sport's global showpiece. They also surprisingly sabotaged two lucrative Confederations Cup campaigns the Socceroos figured were a formality.

100th anniversary of 1st Aussie flight! (Melbourne Museum)

The 100th anniversary of powered flight in Australia fell yesterday, but until now very few people could have named Australia’s first aviator. It was Harry Houdini, American master magician and escapologist.
Houdini specialised in astounding feats such as: escaping from a sealed milk can filled with water; getting out of a straitjacket while suspended upside down from a crane atop a high building; being buried alive and digging his way out; escaping from a packing crate after being lowered into New York’s East River. He was also a pioneer aviator.

Ninety Nations to Visit Melbourne for UN Conference

Melbourne has secured a prestigious UN Meeting, marking the first time the event has ever been held in Australia.

More than 1,200 delegates will be welcomed to Melbourne in September 2010 to attend the United Nations (UN) 63rd Annual Department of Public Information Non-Governmental Organisation Conference (DPI/NGO).

The Business Event win was announced today by Sandra Chipchase, CEO of the Melbourne Convention + Visitors Bureau, which secured the event for Melbourne.

“This is a definite coup for Melbourne, being only the third city outside the UN’s New York headquarters to host the event in more than 60 years.”

Ms Chipchase said that in addition to the direct benefits of the event, the size and reputation of the conference would have the added-value of creating future bidding opportunities within the NGO and health fields.

“Cementing Melbourne’s worldwide reputation for medicine and science, the conference will focus on ‘Global Health’, and will feature eminent speakers, possibly including the Secretary General of the United Nations.

“The UN DPI/NGO Conference will provide the opportunity for the global NGO community to share knowledge and experience about how to best promote and contribute to the advancement of global health.”

Ms Chipchase said that the three day UN DPI/NGO Conference is estimated to inject $3.8m into the Victorian State economy.

“In addition to providing an important boost for the local economy, we also know from the Melbourne Convention Delegate Study that international conventions create new tourists and significant new export dollars and visitation for Melbourne and Victoria.

“The Delegate Study showed that conventions are also a catalyst for regional travel, with almost half of all delegates attending conventions in Melbourne also undertaking pre- and post-event touring throughout the State.

“Representatives from more than 90 countries are expected to attend this conference, in turn providing valuable worldwide exposure for Melbourne.”

Leigh Harry, Chief Executive of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre said: “With Melbourne being the chosen destination in Australia to host many of the world’s major health conventions, we look forward to welcoming the 63rd United Nations DPI/NGO Conference and delegates from all over the world to the Melbourne Convention Centre in 2010.”

A record 6.3 million Australian residents made short-term departures, up from 5.8 million in 2008, according to the ABS research. The top three destinations for Australian travellers were New Zealand, the USA and Indonesia were while tourists visiting Australia were most likely to come from New Zealand, the UK and the USA. Traditionally strong markets such as Japan and Korea posted significant declines in arrivals mainly due to their local economic conditions.
