The Wait is Over at Melbourne Airport

NEW waiting zones at Melbourne Airport are already having an impact on congestion and safety in the area.

The Ring and Ride zones, introduced on December 21, allow people to wait for up to 20 minutes for free when picking up family and friends.

Hume police and airport staff have already noticed less congestion on the Tullamarine Freeway.

The designated areas have been established in the existing long-term parking area.

The initiative was introduced in response to customer feedback over concerns that vehicles were pulling over illegally to wait on the Tullamarine Freeway or in other areas of the airport.

Hume Highway Patrol Sgt Kel Cannon said anything that reduced the number of people stopping on the freeway was excellent for safety.

“The biggest issue we’ve had is with people wanting to save a few dollars,” Sgt Cannon said.

“It will most certainly reduce our workload with responding to collisions and hopefully save somebody a lot of pain from injuries.”

Melbourne Airport chief executive Chris Woodruff said there had also been an observed increase in congestion at pick-up zones with many drivers continuing to drive laps as they waited.

“Now, drivers can use the Ring and Ride waiting zone until their passenger calls to say they are ready to be picked up from the front of the terminal,” Mr Woodruff said.

Drivers waiting more than 20 minutes will pay $2 under the initiative and drivers waiting between 40 minutes and an hour will pay just $4.
